In the moments that go on to define history, something within us instantly recognises it’s going to be significant. When people cast their minds back to the deaths of JFK or John Lennon for example – or perhaps more appropriately for our guests, Freddie Mercury, Kurt Cobain and more recently, George Michael and David Bowie – it can conjure up a vivid picture; a snapshot of what they were doing at the time. Most of the historic moments that took place at Pikes have revolved around celebrating life (such as Freddie’s legendary 42nd birthday party in 1980), or in other cases, the memories are quite hazy due to the circumstances surrounding them.
There’s no doubt the people who party at Pikes are the protagonists of its captivating story, but ultimately it’s the iconic hotel itself that provides the environment in which these tales can all unfold. Magic is housed within the walls of our ancient finca in the San Antonio hills. Here, anything can and often does happen, which is what makes it unlike any other hotel on the island. Boundaries and expectations are replaced with space and opportunity… and that makes for very interesting days and nights indeed. As the saying goes: if these walls could talk!

Each and every room at Pikes room embodies its own peculiar kind of uniqueness, however there’s one that stands out in a world of its own. Room 9 was designed in collaboration with esteemed, London-based interior designers Rockett St George and the result is a haven of quirky delight. A room that both inspires and soothes — dependent on personal disposition – but that guarantees an undeniably rollicking good time, whatever your personality type. Time and time again, it’s one of our most requested rooms (hint: you should book now to guarantee your summer 2019 spot), and once you’ve laid eyes on its iconoclasm, it’s not hard to see why.
In Ibiza – and especially at Pikes – some things defy explanation. Anywhere else in the world they wouldn’t work, but on the white isle they slip nicely into the fold, embraced by the island’s inhabitants of misfits, eccentrics and vagabonds. This is exactly how we like to think of Room 9. It’s a meeting point of strange influences and a melting pot of styles, as Lucy St George of Rockett St George describes: “We painted the walls in our signature black paint, and then added our famously quirky touch to the décor using palm tree floor lights, faux palm trees, a cocktail trolley, some giant artwork and neon lights.” And it doesn’t end there. “Then we added some own-brand, unique furniture, beautiful Moroccan blankets, wall-mounted zebras, a cowhide rug, champagne buckets and monkey lights. Guests who book the room sample Rockett St George at its very best!”

Room 9 is also a space that exudes all the primary Pikes attributes — it’s seductive, tropical, loaded with rock’n’roll spirit and bursting with sex appeal and plenty of Instagram perks. It’s the kind of room where it’s easy to imagine a multitude of Balearic fantasies taking flight. The room is split into two halves — one end for sleeping (or kissing as the neon-lit sign above the bed flirtatiously commands); the other for lounging atop cream-coloured sofas. The design leans towards contemporary, however flecks of Ibiza’s heritage are still visible — notice the Ibicenco-style tiles underfoot and the beamed wooden ceiling above.

This delicious assault on the senses makes it difficult to leave the room, especially when you consider the addition of Pikes robes, our famous fully stocked minibar and an outdoor terrace to enjoy it all on, but before long the unavoidable charms of Pikes begin to call, becoming harder and harder to resist. You’re beckoned towards the eye of the tornado and eventually you’ll welcome mischief and pandemonium with open arms, encouraging it to spin wildly around you. Picture sinking into a siesta by the famous Club Tropicana pool, envisage cocktails in the shade as the afternoon heat draws in, and dinner taken on the alfresco terrace of Room 39 before the music ramps up and the adrenaline kicks in. Cocktails in The Curiosity Shop are up next, before it’s time to follow the the call of the disco ball to Freddie’s.
Once the storm has passed, you can retire to your eccentrically designed suite — close enough to the action to still dip a toe in if you can’t resist; far enough away that it’s like retreating into your own little world if you prefer. Rest your head on the pillow and fall into a state of deeply satisfying slumber. You dream that here, in these moments just passed, you just made your own history. And you’ll always remember where you were: Room 9.
